City looks to scrap, rework Ninth and Kossuth less than two years after pavers were installed. New project could include Ninth Street Hill sidewalk work that would mean replacing trees

ANOTHER ATTEMPT AT NINTH AND KOSSUTH MEANS WORK ALONG NINTH STREET HILL, TOO

Lafayette’s paver installation at Kossuth and South Ninth streets, slowly coming apart one paver at a time since opening in November 2021, will be replaced in 2024 with a more standard pavement and a better drainage system, the city’s engineer said Tuesday.

Piggybacking off that fix is another big change: The city is looking at using the drainage solution as a time to rework sidewalks along Historic Ninth Street Hill, from Kossuth Street down to South Street, city engineer Jeromy Grenard said.

What the city has in mind would mean cutting down trees along that stretch, reworking the curbs to allow “bump-outs” and planting new trees in those, and using some of the historic bricks taken from stretches of Sixth Street and other spots to run between the sidewalks and the curbs.

Since opening in November 2021, pavers at Ninth and Kossuth streets haven’t been able to handle traffic, city officials say. A more traditional intersection could come in 2024. (Photo: Dave Bangert)
