A NEW ERA FOR SHOOK IN MERGER WITH F.C. TUCKER
Signs started popping up in recent weeks in a new chapter for one of Lafayette’s oldest businesses, when Shook Realty Group merged with F.C. Tucker Co. in the Lafayette market.
F.C. Tucker/Shook combined two agencies as Lou Johnson, the owner of the F.C. Tucker franchise in Lafayette since 1989, looked at retirement and the Indianapolis-based company merged operations into the Shook residential business at its offices at Fifth and Ferry streets in downtown Lafayette.
For Shook – a fourth-generation real estate business founded in Lafayette in 1915 by Robert Shook and son, Charles – the move means a split in a partnership with Coldwell Banker that dated to 1998. The Shook family retained ownership of the Shook Commercial Real Estate, Shook Property Management and the Indianapolis-based Shook Realty Group Commercial.
The Shook presence in Greater Lafayette has ties that include development of downtown Lafayette, industrial projects that brought Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Caterpillar, Eli Lilly and A.E. Staley; the land sale that cleared the way for Ross-Ade Stadium at Purdue.
Charlie Shook and Steve Shook, part of the fourth generation following their fathers, Wes and Jim Sr., recently talked about the sale of the residential side of the business and how it came about. The following includes excerpts from that conversation.
Question: What got the ball rolling on the deal?
Steve Shook: It was organic. We have been working on succession here for our residential group for 10 years, trying to plan for leadership succession.
