JUDGE, SHERIFF AMONG THOSE ON BOARD FOR PROPOSED LOCAL INCOME TAX FOR JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER
A proposed 0.1% addition to Tippecanoe County’s local income tax, this one to cover construction costs for a juvenile detention center or future renovations at the county jail, received no apparent pushback Tuesday, as the county council held its first public hearing on the idea.
The correctional facilities income tax, which would mean $50 for to someone with an adjusted gross income of $50,000, would produce an estimated $6.3 million a year, according to figures presented Tuesday by county Auditor Jennifer Weston.
It also could be the basis for construction of a juvenile detention center that was set aside in 2025 as the county waited to get a feel for how the Indiana General Assembly’s property tax reforms projected to play out in the next several years.
“This is an option for us to consider,” council member Ben Murray said Tuesday. “I’ve realized sometimes kicking the can down the road just costs us more in the future. There is a cost associated with this. I fully understand that. I know times are tough right now. … Just something to think about, is if we do nothing now or in a few months, what’s it going to cost us three or four years from now?”
