ABOUT THE VELOCITY DISTRICT’S NEW SINGER
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
In 2023, The Velocity District was riding high as one of Lafayette’s top bands. All top-notch musicians, they crafted a funk-soul-jazz fusion sound that had bookers of every local bar, brewery and festival climbing over themselves to bring the band to their stages and spaces.
Then it happened. The transitional nature of Lafayette finally caught up to the band when lead singer Alexcia Plummer left the band, town, country and hemisphere to live in Dubai. Yes, Dubai of the United Arab Emirates. While most bands lose singers and players to Chicago or Indianapolis, Plummer’s epic move must still be some kind of record in Lafayette music history.

Lesser bands would’ve folded immediately. However, the core of The Velocity District has remained consistent over the years – guitarist Jacob Johnson, bassist Scott Eberhard, drummer Alex Mason and Bonyea Killebrew, who plays just about every other instrument on hand from keytar and saxophones to bass clarinet and flute — persevered, relying on vocals from Killebrew and the bevy of sweet, funky instrumentals that The Velocity District had featured since it began in 2018.
Still, talent recognizes talent. The Velocity District introduced its new singer, Kyla Moffitt, in February, and the 21-year-old vocalist will be on the mic when the band performs at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Knickerbocker Saloon. The event is the historic downtown Lafayette bar’s 190th birthday bash.
Killebrew said that his band’s continued playing and writing allowed for the new singer to slide in seamlessly.
