CLERK DEFENDS VOTE CENTER SITES NEAR PURDUE, AS COUNCIL MEMBER TAKES AIM
Lingering frustration over Tippecanoe County Election Board placement of early polling places and Election Day vote centers – particularly on Purdue’s campus – surfaced again Tuesday morning as the Tippecanoe County Council considered an election-related $2,500 stipend for County Clerk Julie Roush.
As lines formed for the first day of early voting just outside the meeting room, the county council approved the stipend for the Republican clerk, offered to county clerks for the first time under a new state law to compensate for hours worked during presidential and midterm elections.
But not before Lisa Dullum, a Democratic county council member, objected. Dullum – who has been outspoken amid larger blowback about voting opportunities on campus and reduction in Election Day vote center sites – said she thought the stipend set a bad precedent.
“I also have to say that I'm really disappointed with the performance of the Election Board this year,” Dullum said.
