COUNTY COMMISSIONERS REJECT GAS STATION LIMITS ASKED FOR BY LAFAYETTE
Tippecanoe County on Monday rejected proposed zoning codes Lafayette pushed for to limit a proliferation of gas stations, which would limit new ones anywhere within one mile of an existing one.
County commissioners voted against the proposed regulations for unincorporated parts of the county.
“That’s kind of pushing it,” Commissioner David Byers said about the one-mile distance inserted in the zoning code proposal crafted in large part by Lafayette city officials.
The proposed codes lay out architectural design elements, a mandatory plan to cover the costs of decommissioning if stations close and a requirement calling for a 5,500-foot distance – a little more than a mile – between new standalone gas stations and any existing ones. It also would require a 500-foot setback for new gas stations from residential developments.
The proposal also covers decommissioning requirements for new car washes and oil change businesses – though those wouldn’t be covered by rules about how far apart they would need to be.
