Dayton Town Board tells Lafayette: Back off annexation

Land owner says there’s a reason why Lafayette, not a ‘Keep Dayton Small' faction, was asked to annex the property to prep it for development. Plus, a look inside River Road tunnel work.

DAYTON TOWN BOARD TELLS LAFAYETTE TO BACK OFF ANNEXATION EAST OF I-65

Miffed that they found out late in the game that Lafayette planned to annex roughly 97 industrially-zoned acres east of Interstate 65, Dayton Town Board members pleaded with Lafayette City Council members to back off.

Their contention: That land belongs with the town of Dayton, not in Lafayette.

“Dayton is not against progress and has a need for the land you are being asked to annex,” five members of the Dayton Town Board wrote in a four-page letter delivered to the Lafayette City Council late last week.

“We want to control our own destiny,” the Dayton Town Board members wrote. “Only by voting against this annexation will you fall on the right side of history.”

With that, Lafayette found itself stepping into the latest round in the “Keep Dayton Small” saga, an often contentious effort that has been going on nearly a decade in the town of 1,500 to control what happens just across the interstate from Lafayette.
