In this op-ed, state senator from West Lafayette fends off what he calls ‘myths’ close to home and across state campuses about his higher ed reform bill, now waiting for a signature from the governor
Let’s remember that an overly large percentage of conservatives also “experienced” the 2020 presidential election as having been “stolen” by Joe Biden — an “experience” utterly at odds with fact. Basing fundamental policies of structural faculty independence on politically driven grievances, “feelings,” and “experiences” of campus life can be a very slippery slope….
Conservatives can’t get a fair shake in a state that has had a Republican governor since 2005, has supermajorities in the state House and Senate, 7 of 9 U.S. representatives, and both U.S. senators? Ridiculous!
I will repeat - start getting rid of deery, the liar, sneak, and mouthpiece of Daniels now. Do not wait until ‘26. And all republicans that want total control of our lives must go also.
Deery is only doing what he was brainwashed to do by his boss Daniels. Daniels didn’t do it himself because he wanted to retire on a high note of accomplishments, as a great administrator not as the greatest right wing privatizing monster of all time. Deery is a liar and a sneak who is NOT representing his district, but pushing the right wing agenda that he hopes will further his career
If GOP doesn't want to be labeled liars, sneaks, brainwashed, monstrous, fragile, weak, fascists well then they need to stop acting like liars, sneaks, brainwashed, monstrous, fragile, weak, fascists. Cause and effect is a difficult concept for people like them, I know, but please try to understand - actions speak louder than words and when both from Republicans paint them as liars, sneaks, brainwashed, monstrous, fragile, weak, fascists you'd have be utterly delusional to try to defend them as anything but.
Dave, I am baffled by your choice to run this op-ed. I mean, full disclosure, I disagree with it, but that's not why I'm baffled. I can see why you might choose to run a piece by a local politician, even if it he is a bad-faith political operator whose obvious motives are at odds with his stated motives.
What baffles me, though, is that you have given Deery space to say stuff that you've already reported him saying before. There is literally nothing new in here, it's just Deery condescending toward those with whom he disagrees (he can't even feign magnanimity in victory), repeating the same tired talking points he has for months.
Why waste space in your letter with content that is banal and repetitive? Deery has already had his say here, via the extensive quotes you've reported. This piece isn't disappointing because it's unchallenged propaganda, it's disappointing because it adds nothing to the local discussion that hasn't already been said by this man.
I totally agree with this and although at this point I have given up on seeing an apology from Dave, I hope hes at least learned his lesson here and we don't see more nonsense like this in our inboxes.
One central question, whether it be of IN SB 202 or Arizona SB 1477 is, at what point did those aligning themselves with the “party of grit” (a favorite word of Daniels’, I seem to recall) disintegrate into such simpering “snowflakes” that how “welcomed they feel” at college would actually influence their decisions about their entire career paths and economic futures?
This SB202 Bill is very reasonable and consistent with Purdue operations. I agree with the University Administration response. As an Emeritus Professor and a 49 year member of the Purdue community I see nothing to fear and am encouraged by the Chicago Principles being broadened a little. Many in today's society run from debate or define debate as "only speaking with those who agree with me." Critical thinking and critical listening skills seem in short supply. Academia has been considered an Ego System vs. an Eco System. This has not served academia or society very well. Mitch did a heck of a job staying calm and carrying on. Mung is doing the same. Good! It's harder for IU. The liberal arts have been damaged by the illiberal lefty fringe arts. A few of them contribute value to debate when they will debate. Many of them don't like reality and don't like our traditions. They make me laugh a bit with their words like existential, systemic, intersectionality, gender dysphoria, and such. They are creating undo stress by inventing victims rather than encouraging achievement. I predict a return to valuing the content of our character as defined thousands of years ago by Buddhism and Judeo-Christian thinking.
All will be well when this phase passes away as did raccoon coats and bell bottomed pants.
Yes. That, along with a contempt for “words” (as if they are meaningless fake concepts) “like existential, systemic, intersectionality, gender dysphoria”, immediately takes away any credibility of that comment.
Well said Pete. It is obvious such legislation is necessary when the faculty refuses to recognize the overwhelming lack diversity of thought within their ranks. (Dr Hicks column) They have preached for decades that we must look for diversity from all areas of society, unless it disagrees with their political orientation. Their resistance to measure critical thinking skills is further evidence of their commitment to true diversity.
Idiocy being rejected from a place of learning is hardly lack of diversity. It's the only reasonable course of action. We'd have never gone to space if he had idiots in NASA telling us we couldn't because the Earth is flat and the space monsters will eat us. What a step backwards we've gone as a society to try and enable fringe nutjobs.
Agree. A problem here is that the extreme left has abandoned classical liberalism and adopted an autocratic approach mimicking Putin, Xie, et al. "Agree with us or we will riot and perhaps jail you." Democracy is inconvenient to them because "the people" are not always agreeing with the power base. Tolerance of diversity is not good enough for them. We must advocate for the rare and not for established norms that are proven to advance society. Social networking has enabled the noise for extremes to overwhelm the dignity of the majority. We have very few problems of this sort at Purdue. We are happy with basketball teams divided by gender - just one example of doing what makes sense for the vast majority of us.
We are fantastically diverse! No two out of our global 8 billion are the same. That makes life interesting. We are living in the best place at the best time. If only the wider world could enjoy the freedom we hope to maintain. We've not needed a wall to keep us in! I feel very lucky to be conserving liberalism in the war with tyranny.
"’Agree with us or we will riot and perhaps jail you.’ Democracy is inconvenient to them…” Excuse me, did you say “the extreme left”?? Perhaps you were out of the country on January 6, 2021.
This thing where Republicans cause a panic by lying about a problem and then say "people are really concerned about this, we need to do something to address it" is so lame and yet so effective.
And who is the judge of idiocy..the group think of a elitist faculty? Enabling fringe nutjobs? Was Aristotle a nutjob when he first proposed the earth was a sphere? Actually being rejected because others think you are a "nutjob" is a lack of diversity. You've made my point perfectly thank you.

Well, to be fair, not “total.” They don’t want to control our home arsenals of bump stock-equipped firearms, after all.
Deery is only doing what he was brainwashed to do by his boss Daniels. I guess we can rest our point...agree with us or you a "liar, sneak, brainwashed, monster, etc.

DItto this, Dave. You don't need this propaganda.

Yikes. Out with the old.
You speak of “reason” and “thinking,” yet use phrases like “illiberal lefty fringe arts.” Two of these things are not like the other.
Yes. That, along with a contempt for “words” (as if they are meaningless fake concepts) “like existential, systemic, intersectionality, gender dysphoria”, immediately takes away any credibility of that comment.
