Nearly a year after federal courts moved from the Halleck Federal Building, the U.S. Postal Service branch in the nearly century-old building in downtown Lafayette says it has been told it will need to leave, too.
The U.S. Postal Service this week started informing customers that it was looking for a new downtown Lafayette location, remaining in the 47901 ZIP Code, after “the unexpected loss of leasehold at this facility” at the corner of South Fourth and Ferry streets.
Susan Wright, a U.S. Postal Service communications specialist, said there was no deadline for leaving the building, initially built as a post office. She said the postal service was looking for 1,100-square-feet of space, along with dedicated parking, for a new facility.
According to a release from Dawn Moore, USPS real estate specialist: “The relocation project will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, as close as reasonably possible to the existing location. Retail Services will continue at the current facility until all necessary preparations are completed at the new location.”
