FEDS DECLARE HALLECK BUILDING ‘SURPLUS’ IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE
After a slow emptying that started when federal courts left the Charles A. Halleck Federal Building in 2024 and the post office announced it was looking for a new downtown location in 2025, the U.S. General Services Administration issued notice two weeks ago that the nearly-century old facility at Fourth and Ferry streets was considered surplus government property.
In a March 11 notice, the GSA posted an April 10 deadline for proposals from “public agencies for the public uses” in a “negotiated sale” of the Halleck Building, before the property would be listed for sale.
The cities and county are meeting in the coming weeks to determine what, if any, use they’d have for the facility that opened in 1932 and what federal officials meant by a negotiated sale.
Dennis Carson said it’s been no secret that the federal government was moving that way and that the city and county would be among those with first dibs on the property. But he said there were no firm plans for an offer or for a use.
