FORMER WEST LAFAYETTE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER PLEADS ON $326,000 IN COVID RELIEF FRAUD ALLEGATIONS
A former West Lafayette City Council member is expected to formally plead guilty after a federal investigation accused him of wire fraud involving $326,000 he collected in a phony applications for COVID-19 relief for a business with no employees and no customers.
Jon Jones, 31, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 19 in federal court after signing a plea agreement in early August about money he collected then spent on gambling and cryptocurrency purchases, according to the U.S. Department of Justice and documents filed with charges stemming from a nearly two-year period in 2021 and 2022.
According to a guilty plea filed Aug. 10, Jones was living in Lafayette and a student at the IU School of Medicine when he filed a series of applications for COVID-related aid for Med School Side Hustle LLC, a business purported to do tutoring.
