‘ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT’ ZONING PLAN DIES IN WEST LAFAYETTE

The idea of accessory dwelling units, floated last summer as another piece in cutting into West Lafayette’s housing shortage, was a dead ordinance walking heading into Monday night’s city council meeting.

Council members had pulled back on the concept of allowing second dwellings on single residential lots in the past two months, after residents in the near-campus New Chauncey neighborhood skewered the notion of calling over-the-garage dwelling “granny flats” when they saw the end game as squeezing more Purdue students into the small lots on their blocks.

And by the end, council member James Blanco, who had initiated a study of accessory dwelling units in West Lafayette, was the lone vote in favor of the zoning change.
