Ahead of Friday’s celebration of 50 years on the air from the halls of Jefferson High School, here’s a look at how an oldies format continues to evolve. Because your ‘90s is their oldies
Thank you for covering Lafayette Jefferson High School’s radio station! I always enjoy listening to their music, though sometimes it could be a little hokey…
Arbitron has called me twice in my 33 years in Lafayette. They asked what is my first go-to radio station. WJEF wasn't on their list. Then they asked second. WBAA I also recal (one of the times) was not an option either. I've had a lot of fun calling in to the morning show over the years. I'm just sad that neither of my Broncho kids did any time on the microphone.
I am deeply and forever in debt to both Jeff's radio station and to Mr. Herber with the paper because they both launched my oldest son's professional sports writer career with VOX. When Wescott was in high school he was supposed to be the color commentator on the Jeff radio for the basketball games, but since his fellow student wasn't fast enough, my son took over both roles. My husband and I were rolling on the floor with laughter listening to the game, but of course as parents when Wescott got home we gave him hell about not being respectful to his colleague and staying in his lane. The writing was on the wall. The boy was bound to podcasts, radio, whatever the future held. Mr. Herber gave Wescott the space to cover music and sports in the high school paper, both of which my son did with gusto. Thanks to Jeff and their amazing staff past and present. My oldest owes his current professional success to the folks who believed in him at Jeff. And yes, he's down in Austin, Texas supporting live music, social justice (Eyes of Texas controversy) and site editor on SB nation's biggest site. God Bless you all for launching my oldest.
