What a shame that in light of the strong statements offered recently by Pope Leo, the Vatican Sec'y of State, three American Cardinals, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that no Catholic clergy were in attendance at this assembly of religious leaders.

I noticed that! Shame on them.

As a spiritual, Vatican 2 Catholic with little tolerance for the RC church's hierarchy, it seems to me the greater-Lafayette Catholic clergy didn't read Leo's memo that supporting pro-life is more than being anti-abortion...the one-trick-pony I've heard too often in Mass homilies.

This is why I'm a recovering catholic, currently leaning toward the episcopal church.

I assume, Trisha, you are local. If so, check out St. John's Episcopal on the corner of Ferry and 6th(?). I have a number of friends who are parishioners.

That's the plan! I've been researching them for weeks, and I have a friend who is a reverend- out of state and she looked into them too! I live about a block away so planning on next Sunday! They hare a lot with the RC faith without some of the things I don't like.

Glad to hear it!! One thing to note: 2/8 there will only be one service, at 10:15 ( 8:00 is canceled for that Sunday, in case you were planning to be an early bird 😊). Will be a good day to visit!

I came here to say the same - especially in light of this weekend's Gospel we heard at St. Tom's:

Matthew 5:1-12a

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

James,

Thanks for your addition to this thread.

The Beatitudes seem to be lost in the shuffle by Christian Nationalists, their white Evangelical enablers, and sadly too many Catholics.

I agree. I see a lot of MAGA parents at my kids' school - Central Catholic. I don't understand how a Catholic reconciles their support of this administration and its immoral, illegal actions.

All about the vocal part... abortion, and let's not forget the quiet part..

lessening their taxes.

My first professional role was a Social Studies teacher in Burbank, CA at a Catholic high school run by the Sisters of Providence. Their mission is education and healthcare.

The nuns with whom I taught walked the walk getting in trouble with the Cardinal for their activism during the Ceasar Chavez era and marches to help the working-class Hispanics of greater Los Angeles.

While they were vocally against abortion as a form of contraception, they also took a nuanced position on abortion from that health perspective.

Being located near the Burbank movie studios and Disney headquarters across the street, I'd say our student population was upper middle class.

Knowing the Sisters' philosophy most likely had conservative parents self-select away from PHS.

BTW - our student population in the late 70s and early 80s was 25% to 30% non-Christian...including Christians, Jews, Moslems, and eastern Asian sects. All had to take the four years of religious studies.

Baptists are notably not in agreement.

Well, plenty of Methodists. So you know they can read.
