JUDGE REJECTS MOVE TO STATE HOSPITAL FOR PURDUE MURDER SUSPECT
Ji Min Sha, accused in the October 2022 murder of his Purdue dorm roommate Varun Chheda, will not return to the state hospital but will stay in Tippecanoe County Jail as fresh, court-ordered competency evaluations are done in the next two months, according to a judge’s order Monday.
On Friday, during a hearing with Sha, Tippecanoe Circuit Court Judge Sean Persin had contemplated sending the former Purdue student back to the Logansport State Hospital, as questions persist about whether he can assist in his defense less than a month after a state doctor said Sha was competent when he took prescribed anti-psychotic medications.
On Monday, Persin instead granted a motion from Sha’s attorneys, asking for competency evaluations as the next step before setting the next hearings or his trial.
