And now’s, here’s …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
“European Imports,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, Rat Pak Venue, 102 N. Third St., Lafayette — The atypical combination of harp, clarinet and flute will bring a new sound to classical European pieces for the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra’s latest edition of its B Side concert series of smaller, more intimate concerts. Flutist Laura Recendez, harpist Melissa Gallant and clarinetist Christina Martin will team up to take on Celtic tunes in time for St. Patrick’s Day, as well as fiery Spanish dance music and French composer Georges Bizet’s “Entr’actes,” orchestral interludes from the classic opera “Carmen.” $20. Tickets.
“The Jungle Book Kids,” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, 313 N. Fifth St., Lafayette — A herd of 25 children will take the stage for Civic Youth Theatre’s latest show, “The Jungle Book Kids.” Directed by Julie Baumann and Monica Schaeffer, the short show concentrates on the music of the Disney classic “The Jungle Book.” Songs like “Bear Necessities” and “I Want to Be Just Like You” are ingrained in pop culture, and the young performers like Hazel Bucher (Baloo), Grady Gorski (Mowgli), Jack Ewing (King Louie), Charlotte Adler (Shere Khan) and Kiaya Gillette (Kaa) will help get those songs into yet another generation’s purview. $18.50. Tickets. Sunday’s 2:30 p.m. matinee is sold out.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Family Day, Saturday, March 14, Nine Irish Brothers — While some call it “St. Practice Day,” the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day is Nine Irish Brothers’ Super Bowl, World Cup and Olympics all in one daylong celebration. Both West Lafayette and Lafayette locations will open early at 10 a.m. with Irish breakfasts and coffees — and anything else a lad or lass could want from the menu. The annual, all-ages St. Patrick’s Marching Parade will kick off at 11 a.m. at the Lafayette location only, ending at the restaurant and pub, 3520 Indiana 38 East. That’s when local musicians will take over the party in the form of pub favorites Matt Hill (11 a.m.) and Lucas Harry (7 p.m.). Across the river at the flagship West Lafayette location, 119 Howard Ave., revelers will enjoy the acoustic musical stylings of Harry (11 a.m.) and Hill (7 p.m.) as well.
St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17 — Both Nine Irish Brothers will open at 11 a.m. to celebrate the real holiday, and live music will permeate the festive air as the Guinness flows. Patrons must be 21 or older. Here is the lineup for both locations:
West Lafayette — Traveler’s Dream, Noon; Lachlan, 3:30 p.m., and Lucas Harry, 8 p.m.
Lafayette — Lachlan, 11 a.m.; Lucas Harry, 2 p.m.; Traveler’s Dream, 4:30 p.m., and Laughing Jack, 8 p.m.
Card Show, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, March 15, Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, 1406 Teal Road, Lafayette — Dust off all those Michael Jordan and Mickey Mantle rookie cards as well as the 1999 first edition Charizard Pokémon cards you have laying around and attend the big trading card show this weekend brought to Lafayette by Trade River Cards. The last show drew more than 1,700 proving trading cards are at a high that rivals the early 1990s heyday. During the pandemic, the trading card industry rose to prominence again thanks to a powerful mix of nostalgia, investments, and sharing viral pulls of Lebron James rookie cards via social media. This has led to packs being ripped open early and often — and many will rip this weekend, but what will be inside?
Songwriters in the Round with Fergus Daly and David Sparks, 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — The Songwriters Association of Mid-North Indiana will show how the song sausage is made with two local songwriters revealing their processes and, of course, the products of the process — original songs that offer engaging lyrics, melody and structure. Fergus Daly is one of the best to ever songsmith in Lafayette, whether it be solo, with other acoustic musicians or plugged into his more rocking format with the always excellent Fergus Daly Band. David Sparks is a newer local talent who recently produced a full-length album — on vinyl even! — that was tracked in The Arts Federation’s The Rec Room recording studio. “Entropy and Love” contains seven original rock tunes with a pinch of Americana in the spirit of The Jayhawks and The Bottle Rockets. This event is hosted by Jon St. Bourbon and proceeds will go toward the annual Shirley Martin Scholarship for Young Songwriters. $5.
