LSC BOARD MEMBER SUGGESTS NOTIFYING PARENTS ABOUT EVERY BOOK CHECKED OUT
Interesting conversation the other day when the Lafayette school board looked over a proposed update to its process for removing objectionable books from classrooms and libraries – something public school districts across Indiana will be doing by Jan. 1, 2024, to meet a new state law meant to make it easier for parents to challenge materials in classrooms and school libraries.
During a work session last week, school board member Chuck Hockema – elected in 2022 on a platform promising to drain LSC of “woke” policies and practices – wondered if the policy still made it too difficult for parents to get books out of school libraries.
His suggestion: Notify parents every time a student checks something out of the school library.
