LSC LOOKS TO SAVE 4-DAY SCHOOL WEEK FOR VINTON, AS NEW LAW THREATENS TO TAKE IT AWAY
Vinton Elementary’s move to a four-day school week, now in its third year, got the blessing of the Lafayette school board Monday night for a fourth year – provided the state allows the schedule for the 2027-28 academic year.
LSC Superintendent Les Huddle said the district had met with a pair of state senators, with additional meetings with Statehouse officials beyond that, hoping to keep the four-day schedule in the face of a new law that will limit that schedule to only schools that get the highest grades in Indiana’s return to an A-F ranking.
“We’re ready to pivot, if we have to,” Huddle said Monday night after the LSC school board approved seeking a state waiver for a Monday-Thursday schedule for Vinton Elementary for a fourth year.
“But we’re also ready to make the case that this is working at Vinton,” Huddle said. “We’ve said all along this was done in the name of school choice in LSC, which seems to be the buzz word these days. It’s not for everybody, of course. But we’d like the state to come see why we’re doing it at Vinton.”
