LSC OFF TO ‘UNACCEPTABLE’ START WITH NEW BUS SCHEDULE
The first day of a new Lafayette School Corp. start/dismissal schedule, designed to do a better job of getting kids to and from school on time, got off to a rough start Wednesday.
Parents across LSC were steaming on social media about buses that they reported were running, in some cases, an hour behind Wednesday, the opening day of the school year for the bulk of Lafayette schools.
And teachers – already vowing to work only their contracted hours after a summer-long dispute with the LSC school board over the new school schedules to accommodate a transportation fix – were just as steamed about monitoring bus zones for students left waiting after the final bell.
LSC Superintendent Les Huddle called the situation “unacceptable.”
“We are nowhere near satisfied with today’s transportation,” Huddle said at the end of the day Wednesday. “While it was the first day, some of our drop off times were unacceptable. We are working tonight and again tomorrow morning to make improvements.”
What caused the delayed pick up and drop-offs – whether simply first-day glitches in a new system or some other factor – wasn’t immediately clear Wednesday.
“‘Unacceptable’ doesn’t come close to describing today,” Cait Lohmoeller, a parent with a pair of fifth-graders at Sunnyside Intermediate School, said.
