Lafayette Big Swing Band played there many times. We gave the crowd a taste of 1930's and 40's Big Band sound with 18 pieces. It was a gas. The band is ongoing and 26 years of swinging!
LBC was a great venue. Loved every show I saw. If I had to pick a favorite national band's show, I'd say NRBQ stands out. Among locals LD Miller and his brothers and Mike Kelsey never failed to impress. One of my favorite memories playing in there was the '95 FOB show on New Years. Dennis Leas brought a load of Silly String and much of the place was covered in it. I was sipping champagne in the loo and dropped the bottle, breaking a sink. I'll also never forget standing on Main St with my buddy Dave Reason and chatting with Jonathan Richman. That was pretty amazing.
Yes indeed. Many moments of musical magic. One of my favorites at the LBC was Eilen Jewel. I was on the FOB board at the time and managing the merc table. After the show, I got to hand Eilen $1,000.00 in sales. She was so gracious. A few years later, I caught up with Eilen in my hometown of Bozeman, Montana. She told me that show in Lafayette at the LBC was the best of their tour. All the band members signed the poster from my Bozeman college bar and they signed another one for Richard and Meredith which I gave to them. Another one of my favorite shows at the LBC wasn't a FOB event. It was the CD opening of Mike Kelsey's November CD in the spring of 2003 and the opening act was the Millers doing an acoustic show. Magnificent. Such lovely memories. Okay, one more...but it was a FOB show, but at Duncan...the lead singer of Crooked Still told the audience, she would be right back after she had a piece of my cherry pie. I was the Pie Lady for FOB during certain years. Ask the Waifs from Australia, who played a show at the LBC. They mentioned my pie on ANZAC radio. What made FOB great was that we took good care of the musicians. We fed them, we gave them Vegemite when they were a long way from home (I gave the Waifs Vegemite because I knew how important it was to Aussies) and in return the musicians gave us their best. There was real music magic in those years. Don't forget that Mike Kelsey gave his talent and his energy to launch FOB by always supporting them in the early years. Mike's contribution to FOB can't be overstated. Thank you, LBC for supporting live music. And thank you FOB for making my life better.
Not to be too much of a Debbie Downer, but I had dinner there this past Sunday with some friends and they were starting to already run out of certain side dishes. Just prepared for them to be out of some of the foods.

Big Sswing rocks the house. A good drummer makes a good big band.
Alejandro Escovedo and his band absolutely rocked the place when he was there.

All true.

Yes! Robyn Hitchcock!
This was such a fun column to read! So many good memories of shows over the years. Thanks for reminding us of all the good times.
Love this kind of deep local story, thanks Dave!
Thanks for reading it. Everyone understood the assignment, for sure.
Enjoyed this article and reflecting on all the FOB shows I saw there.
Buckwheat Zydeco on March 4, 2006!
And on February 5, 2005 - at least that’s what my photos are telling me…
