Find some space for these early spring workhorses, now playing at our farmers markets. Plus, Diving Divas and Dudes check out El Charro, now playing in the old O’Charley’s in Lafayette.
Having recently moved downtown, I am excited for the weekly market. I am however proceeding cautiously after last week seeing a single 1 lb bunch of asparagus priced at EIGHT DOLLARS! Are you kidding me? I'm all about supporting the local farmers but that's a bit crazy. I can go to any local grocery store and buy a very similar 1 lb bunch for less than half that price.
Prices are higher because the growers are local folks who have greenhouses or other growing places that guarantee really fresh produce. Plus these local growers have higher hidden costs like fuel for trucks, rental space at the Farmer''s Market and limited marketing outlets. So, yes, it will be significantly more expensive, but almost always fresher and grown in our local community it's sort of a price for support of local growers. I,. too, have recoiled at eggs at $8.00 a dozen. But once I found one that was a golden egg, I was convinced.
