NEW TIPPECANOE COUNTY DATA CENTER REGULATIONS UP FOR APC VOTE WEDNESDAY

Proposed zoning code updates that would come just shy of a ban on hyperscale data centers in Tippecanoe County will go to the Area Plan Commission for a public hearing and vote Wednesday.

The proposed regulations – including 20-mile restrictions from the nearest large-scale data center, deep setbacks from property lines and requirements for developers to pay to upgrade the energy grid so local customers didn’t get stuck covering higher rates – have been in the works for a year.

Along the way, county officials have pushed back against simply banning data centers, anticipating that the Indiana General Assembly could outlaw all-out local restrictions.

Instead, as an APC staff report put it ahead of Wednesday’s hearing: “This proposal is very restrictive, such that staff believes it would likely prohibit, or at least strongly discourage, large data centers from locating in Tippecanoe County.”
