New rolling five-year deal bumps president’s pay by 30% and more than doubles retention bonuses, pushing compensation to $1.4 million, as trustees say Chiang ‘is in high demand’

PURDUE GIVES PRESIDENT MUNG CHIANG A 30% RAISE, BIGGER RETENTION BONUS, EXTENDED CONTRACT
Purdue trustees added two years to President Mung Chiang’s contract, giving him a raise and more than doubling his current annual retention bonuses, saying Friday that the move is a vote of confidence in how he’s been leading the university since 2023 and their hope to keep him in West Lafayette.
“He is in high demand, we know that for a fact,” Gary Lehman, Purdue trustee chair, said Friday during a meeting at the university’s Indianapolis campus.
“The success the university has had gives him great marketable status with other ones,” Lehman said. “We don’t want to lose him.”
