Resolution on Gaza ceasefire headed to WL council, after all
The move comes after three months of raucous public comment at city council meetings and previous reluctance by the city council to make a formal comment on an issue in which it had no direct say
After three months of insisting that the West Lafayette City Council would not make a formal statement on the war in Gaza or call for a ceasefire – even as people packed council chambers, loudly calling on council members to do so during raucous meetings in March, April and May – a resolution on the war in Gaza is on the council’s agenda for Monday.
Council members Laila Veidemanis and Iris O’Donnell Bellisario will sponsor a resolution meant to back a push for the U.S. to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza, call for the return of hostages and push for a cease fire in a war that has killed more than 34,000 people since Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023.
“Iris and I have talked about this since the first meeting in March,” Veidemanis said Wednesday about a resolution posted with the city council agenda earlier this week.
