Thank you for hanging in there so late to report the result of this meeting. And for your ongoing reporting. As the councilor noted last night, your uniquely complete coverage of this issue has been so important to the community.
I can honestly say I have never watched a city council meeting before and a seven hour long one means I’ll probably never watch another one.
I got cut off from staying in the building because it was past capacity. Then it was hard to hear the meeting at first because of the demonstration not related to the rezone issue.
Something nobody has really confirmed, is this company guaranteed it’s still getting that CHIPS money? They talked like that was part of the deal but from the last read, the current president was still threatening to kill that bill.
If they don’t get that funding, are they still going to build on their own dime?
There also was no mention if the city agreed to accepting only the 12%.
Like they said there are a lot of hoops this company has to go through before it’s a done deal.
I believed if this rezone got turned down, it would be the health of the children who live here in the community who could convince enough no votes.
I’m wondering that myself, about the taxes that WL will receive. Specifically are both sites now Innovation Development Districts (getting 12% from IEDC), or will one of them still be a TIF (West Lafayette)?
I’ve not been sharp enough to understand the pros and cons of each and especially how the IDD would be better for WL than the TIF.
Great job again, Dave. Finally, I am able to give my opinion on the council’s vote. All in all it was a farce. As 2 members read their carefully crafted reasons, it was obvious that they had made up their minds before they heard the constitutes comments. Nor did they or the rest of the council ( bar one member ) feel the need to hear all the comments, as they walked in and out of the session. The last straw was the lack of couth when a member left numerous times and returned with food to be eaten at the council table. I hope in the future that we, the voters, receive more respect.

Thank you Dave for sticking with this story and sticking with this meeting.
What litigation will now follow? And yes, the reporting on this has been instructive. I'm on the Lafayette side of the river.
