SOLAR FANS GEAR UP, RALLY SUPPORT WITH UTILITY-SCALE ZONING CHANGES IN THE WORKS
With one proposed utility-scale solar project sidelined and in court in Tippecanoe County and county officials rewriting zoning rules amid a one-year moratorium, a solar advocacy group has been holding a series of community meetings and going door-to-door to promote why it says the county is primed for large solar installations.
A Solar United Neighbors organizer says the national nonprofit, pro-solar group isn’t tied to any particular project, including the 1,700-acre Rainbow Trout Solar Project rejected in 2025 by the county’s Board of Zoning Appeals.
“We exist basically in an educational format,” Erin Charpentier, Indiana rural associate for Solar United Neighbors, said. “We have launched a campaign because right now, with the (large-scale solar) moratorium in Tippecanoe County, what we’re trying to do is get information out to the community about how large-scale solar can really benefit communities.”
