Happy Thanksgiving. Just a few notes before the table’s set …
ABOUT THOSE WHITE HOUSE TURKEYS: Remember Peanut Butter and Jelly, the White House turkeys pardoned in 2021 by President Joe Biden before being carted to Purdue? They’re still in West Lafayette, living out their pardoned life in a specially made enclosure at the Purdue Animal Science Research and Education Center – one way to tout Indiana’s role as the fourth largest turkey-producing state in the U.S.
Here's a video Purdue made to give an update, one Thanksgiving later:
And then there’s this, from Indianapolis Star reporter Sarah Bowman, who visited the pair of 45-pound toms recently and came up with this take: “Air conditioning, treats and hugs. Pardoned turkeys live a luxurious lifestyle at Purdue.”
REMINDER, IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A THANKSGIVING MEAL: The 36th edition of Lafayette Urban Ministry’s community Thanksgiving dinner will be noon-2 p.m. Thursday at Central Presbyterian Church, 31 N. Seventh St. in downtown Lafayette. The Community Thanksgiving Feast is free and expects to serve 800 meals to community members looking for a place to land for the holiday. Entertainment will be provided by West Lafayette High School orchestra students, Blue Moon Rising and Larry Guentert Jazz Duo. If you’re up for helping out, LUM will take donations here: https://www.lumserve.org/programs/food-programs/thanksgiving/
‘PILGRIM PETE’ TABLE FAVORS, VIA DAVE SATTLER: Friend Dave Sattler pulled this one out of his archives, good for the Purdue fan at your Thanksgiving table this year. Sattler, a former owner of Lafayette Printing and J&C Sunday editorial cartoonist for nearly 50 years, came up with this idea for a friend several years ago. He published the easy “Pilgrim Pete” table favor project on his new Substack, My View From Here. (If you haven’t subscribed, here’s a way in.)
For more on this one from Dave Sattler, here you go:
Thanks to Purdue Convocations for its support for today’s edition.
