A few notes on a Sunday morning …
OOF, PURDUE: “How did this happen?” That was the lede on J&C reporter Sam King’s analysis after Saturday’s brutal result at Ross-Ade Stadium. Cartoonist Dave Sattler echoed the sentiment, along with the score, on his Substack after Purdue lost to Notre Dame.
If you have the heart for it, here are some wrap-ups on the game, what went wrong and what’s next:
More from Sam King: “Purdue football loses to Notre Dame in historically bad fashion.”
This one’s from IndyStar reporter Nathan Baird: “Purdue football's embarrassing Notre Dame implosion betrays signs of progress.”
And one via Tom Dienhart at Gold and Black: “Ten observations: Notre Dame-Purdue.”
WEST LAFAYETTE TOWN HALL MONDAY FOR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR: Jennifer McCormick, the Democratic candidate for governor, will hold a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the West Lafayette Public Library, 208 W. Columbia St. The campaign stop for the former Indiana superintendent of public instruction is part a series of public meetings leading up to the November general election. McCormick faces Mike Braun and Libertarian Donald Rainwater in the Nov. 5 election.
PURDUE’S DEGAS COLLECTION OPENS TO PUBLIC WEDNESDAY: Purdue’s new Degas Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union will open to the public Wednesday, Sept. 18. The gallery, a second-floor room once home to the Sagamore Room dining facility, was designed to showcase castings from the plaster casts by French impressionist Edgar Degas. Purdue alum Avrum Gray donated the collection to Purdue in 2023, made up of castings from Degas’ plaster casts. The works include a 1997 casting of "La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans (Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen)” a signature piece of Degas’ sculpture work. The university will host an invitation-only debut Tuesday, followed by the public opening Wednesday. The Degas Gallery, Room 231 of the Purdue Memorial Union, will be open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and by appointment on weekends. Here’s a Based in Lafayette interview with Gray from 2023 after he arranged to give the works to Purdue:

ICYMI, NEW PLANS FOR OLD PUB SITE: A plate of wings at The Pub might have helped after that Notre Dame game at Ross-Ade. Fourteen years after The Pub closed and a dozen years since the popular hangout was razed at Union and Fourth streets, developers have a plan to build 36 townhouses on the empty, 1.4-acre site. This is the Based in Lafayette report from Friday:
ALSO ICYMI …: This week’s edition of Tim’s Picks still has plenty of flavor left, including today’s performance of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live in Concert” at Purdue’s Elliott Hall of Music. That and more here heading into the end of the weekend and the start of a busy week, including an encore show from Friends of Bob music co-op and a Q&A ahead of the return of Purdue’s International Film Forum …
