CAMPAIGN SIGN RESTRICTIONS PROPOSED NEAR VOTE CENTERS: Proposed limits on the number and size of candidate campaign signs outside polling places will go to Tippecanoe County commissioners for consideration Monday.

The proposed rules come after a May primary when several sites that host Tippecanoe County vote centers raised concerns about a glut of signs, the size of some and the use of metal fence posts driven into the ground near utility, water and fiber optic lines.

On Thursday, the three-member Tippecanoe County Election Board unanimously recommended the proposed ordinance, which would:

  • Limit candidates to two signs within 100 feet of a polling place.

  • The signs would be limited in size to 36-by-24-inches.

  • Signs would not be allowed to “be placed using wood posts, metal posts or any other means of support which will or is likely to cause ascertainable damage to any property.”

  • Signs wouldn’t be allowed to go up at a polling place earlier than 24 hours before it opens and come down within 24 hours after the polling place closes.

Mike Smith, part of the county election office, said the proposed ordinance was based on one in Hamilton County and that, if approved, Tippecanoe County would be the third in the state with similar campaign sign rules. He said he expected more counties to move in the same direction.
