Some notes early in a frigid week …
STUDY OK’D FOR NORTHERN SECTION OF U.S. 231 CONCEPT: Closing the loop on this one. Tippecanoe County commissioners on Monday agreed to a cost-share agreement that includes the county putting up $10,000 and Lafayette and West Lafayette each contributing $5,000 for a study into building an extension of U.S. 231 from U.S. 52 in West Lafayette to Interstate 65 in northern Tippecanoe County. The other portion of the money for the $100,000 study would come through federal funds.
The study is billed as a preliminary look into the concept, fueled by recent and anticipated economic development on the west side of Greater Lafayette. No firm map, beyond a rough, dotted line that traced that arc in Wabash-Tippecanoe Township land use plans approved in 2024, has been proposed. The yearlong study is expected to lay out the parameters for the eventual plotting of a route, environmental issues, costs and more, Doug Poad, a transportation planner with the Area Plan Commission, said.
