And now, with five suggestions for your Greater Lafayette week, it’s …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
“Of Thee I Sing,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — Local classical vocalist Audrey Johnson will present a musical jaunt through American history with songs inspired by the women’s suffrage movement, Jewish-American composers and Purdue University’s own Amelia Earhart. Accompanied by pianist Lee Anna Atwell, Johnson’s show will include historical images, a narrative story, audience participation and more than 15 costume changes. Johnson says, “The unifying mission for all of these programs is to inspire admiration for our nation’s history and to motivate all of us towards positive civic engagement today.” This event is free but reservations can be made.
“Bling on a Budget,” 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S. 10th St., Lafayette — Get a jump on your holiday shopping and help a future art student in the process. The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette will host an Art League Scholarship fundraiser in the form of “Bling on a Budget,” a thrift and vintage jewelry sale and other small items like scarves, purses and ties. Friday evening, be sure to stay late for a “Civic Sings” concert from Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette performers presenting favorite holiday tunes.
TEDx Wabash Heritage Trail, 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — Formerly known as TEDx Lafayette, TEDx Wabash Heritage Trail is back with a renewed energy, which will be evidenced by its next event slated for this weekend. This localized chapter of TEDx — a format of presenting interesting ideas, research and art to the public in 18-minute multimedia presentations — has assembled an all-star cast of Lafayette musicians, activists and leaders. New perspectives will be explored, and lively discussion will be generated. Scheduled for the event include singer-songwriter Scott Greeson, forestry expert Dai Peters, county librarian Jos Holman, Pink Team founder Alejandra Malo, data analyst Carl Landskron and author Nicole Gebhardt. Young Newton Country singer-songwriter Lindsey Lowe will perform the event’s “halftime show.” $30-$42.75. Tickets.
“Turkey Toss,” 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, Wolf Park, 4004 E. County Road 800 North, Battle Ground — The humans of Greater Lafayette won’t be the only ones feasting on succulent turkey this Thanksgiving season. Wolf Park will celebrate the holiday by giving its furry animal ambassadors another creative, enriching activity — and filling wolves’ and foxes’ bellies in the process. While enjoying the park’s trail, you could watch the wolves rejoice in digging their fangs into turkey and all the canine-friendly trimmings. $18, $15 for children ages 6-13. Tickets.
Usurance for Appalachia: Benefit for Hurricane Helene Survivors with Traveling Broke and Out of Gas, The Velocity District, Cloud Climber, Cody Brothers and DJ Circle T, 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — In late September, powerful winds and relentless flooding from Hurricane Helene damaged homes, businesses and vital infrastructure, leaving a lasting impact on a large swath of North Carolina. Towns and cities like Black Mountain, Marshall and Asheville were severely impacted, displacing families and entire communities left with nothing. Almost two months later, residents in these areas are still digging out. To help with their recovery and rebuilding, Lafayette musicians will band together for a benefit concert for Hurricane Helene Survivors. Headlining will be the first Lafayette appearance of Traveling Broke and Out of Gas in years. Guitarist and vocalist Cody Hall is a former North Carolinian. “Appalachia has always shown us so much love as a band when we were touring,” he said, “and I lived down there in high school and shortly in my early 20s. We definitely wanted to give to this cause, even if it’s just a drop in the ocean.” Also performing will be local funk-jazz purveyors The Velocity District, Cody Brothers and new trio Cloud Climber, comprised of most of the former Black Rock Serenaders. DJ Circle T spins before and between the bands. Pay what you can donations will be collected at the door.
