And now, presented in living color …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
New gallery exhibitions reception, 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 2, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — Art partners Jordan Weaver and Eric Wolinsky will unveil new multimedia forms in their new show, “Chromaphone: An Interactive Exploration of Color, Sound, and Motion.” Inspired by science, philosophy and absurdity, the artists transform galleries into their own participatory art oasis for eyes and ears. Using their smartphones, visitors can interact with the works by generating sound and video from the works. There will be turntables, shifting color forms and mechanical curiosities throughout. Sedigheh “Sadie” Fathollahzadeh is a painter and Ph.D. student in special education at Purdue University, but she also has three fine arts degrees, which she utilizes in the new solo show, “Silent Echoes.” Inspired by “raw emotions, contradictions and the silent struggles that define our existence,” Sadie’s collection of new portraits show the suffering as well as the metaphorical masks we hide behind. From the young artist, “Through these paintings, I invite viewers to look beyond the surface and question the spaces we inhabit. How much of our suffering is hidden? How often do we smile to mask what we can no longer express? And in a world that offers the illusion of freedom, how much space do we truly have to be ourselves?” The Arts Federation’s third new show represents Lafayette’s yearlong bicentennial celebration. “Quilting Connection” is a new collection of beautiful quilts crafted and hung by the Purdue Women’s Club. Some pieces commemorate some of downtown Lafayette’s prominent landmarks as well as our city’s namesake, the Marquis de Lafayette. These exhibits run through May 30.
Kameron Marlowe, 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, Neon Cactus, 360 Brown St., West Lafayette — Pop country hunk Kameron Marlowe will swing through West Lafayette as he supports his latest album, “Sad Songs for the Soul,” and prepares for the CMA Fest, the Country Music Association’s giant showcase featuring such luminaries as Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, and Colbie Caillat held June 7 in Nashville, Tennessee. Marlowe first splashed on the scene after a successful stint on NBC’s “The Voice.” He was quickly signed by Columbia Nashville, and the 27-year-old from Kannapolis, North Carolina, poured enough pain and whiskey into his music that is sure to impress any fan of country music. Check out his single “Giving You Up,” which was certified gold in 2021. $20. Tickets.
Malambre, 9 p.m. Saturday, May 3, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — The sounds of the Caribbean and South America will intermingle and much sexy dancing will be born when Malambre takes The Spot stage. The band formed about a year ago performs Colombian cumbia as well as Cuban bolero and son styles of music. Almost a chiller cousin band to Clave Caribe, although they only share one member in guitarist/keyboardist Dima Kondratyev, Malambre could/should gain as much of fanbase as the tenured Clave with such great musicianship.
Colton Dixon, 6 p.m. Sunday, May 4, Long Center for the Performing Arts, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette — Christian rock singer Colton Dixon will make his Lafayette debut this weekend with more than 10 years of inspirational music making behind him. The 33-year-old from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has charted numerous singles on Christian contemporary music airwaves, including his recent top-10 hits “Rest of My Life” and “Up + Up.” The public was first introduced to Dixon way back in 2012 when he was a member of “American Idol” season 11 — where he made it all the way to seventh place in the competitive reality show. $25 and $35. Tickets.
CoyoteBear, 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Cody “CoyoteBear” Hall returns to People’s for two sets of his signature mix of blues, folk, country and rock backed by his band of all killers. Be sure to snag a copy of his excellent LP, “Too Many Ghosts,” after the show. $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Tickets.
