By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
“How Suite It Is” with Andrea Raes, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, Rat Pak Venue, 102 N. Third St., Lafayette — A small ensemble of Lafayette Symphony Orchestra musicians led by flutist Andrea Raes will present composer Claude Bolling’s “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano” in its entirety. Hailed as a crossover hit when it debuted in 1975, the suite spectacularly synthesizes classical and jazz for a unique listening experience. The concert is part of the LSO’s B-Side series of informal concerts, primarily performed in downtown Lafayette’s Rat Pak Venue. $15. Tickets.
Afroman with P-Sullee and DJ Sunn, 9 p.m. Friday, March 8, Rat Pak Venue, 102 N. Third St., Lafayette — Pre-pandemic, it was as if Afroman was renting in Lafayette. The rapper most known for the 2001 hit, “Because I Got High,” and his finely coifed afro played Lafayette bars a handful of times. After a several-year hiatus, ’Fro is back and ready to challenge Indiana’s antiquated cannabis laws once again on the strength of his anthem, which peaked at No. 13 on the U.S. pop charts and featured Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes of “Jay and Silent Bob” fame in the video. This Lafayette show is part of a two-month tour that will take him through April 20, of course. Indiana emcee P-Sullee and Lafayette’s own DJ Sunn will open. $20 in advance.
Throne, Assimilator and Exterminate All Rational Thought, 9 p.m. Saturday, March 9, Guac Box, 308 State St., West Lafayette — It’s another Midwest metal weekend in West Lafayette. Michigan’s Throne (“blackened death”) and Assimilator of Fort Wayne (thrash) will be joined by Exterminate All Rational Thought (EART), another Fort Wayne act that promotes an almost indescribable dark and heavy sound. EART’s new track “Minute of Your Time” is an epic, 10-minute (!) instrumental that borders on power metal with numerous peaks and valleys of heaviness. $10.
Augmented Hearts and Life in Idle with The Mixelpricks and Molly O’Malley, 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, Eleventh House, 116 N. Third St., Lafayette — Emo’s resurgence continues with the Lafayette debuts of Augmented Hearts from St. Louis and Life in Idle — a Dayton, Ohio, combo that has opened for Hawthorne Heights and Yellowcard. The two out-of-state emo acts will headline an all-ages bash at Eleventh House. Opening will be a Lafayette pop-punk trio that were playing all-ages shows when most that will be in attendance weren’t even born yet. From 1995-2001, The Mixelpricks were local staples in such long gone venues as Door No. 3 and University Church. The band toured multiple times, opening for the likes of The Lillingtons, Fifteen and Dillinger Four. Two-thirds of The ’Pricks eventually moved away from Indiana, but the musicians still rock and record on occasion. Molly O’Malley, a Cleveland “daydream punk/overcast pop” singer-songwriter will also open this stacked and eclectic lineup. $5.
John Till with The Cody Brothers, 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — $10. Two for Tuesday isn’t just for classic rock stations playing a pair of Styx hits back-to-back. People’s Brewing will welcome two folk and country blues acts when Illinois singer-songwriter John Till performs after a set from Sam and Zac Cody, two pickin’ brothers from Williamsport. $10. Tickets.
