By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
King Sans with Syren, 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — Chicago “gothic noisepunk duo” King Sans consists of drummer and vocalist Izabella Rose and guitarist and vocalist Jake Steven James. Together, they create dark, moody, angry and beautiful music together. Just listen to the band’s newest single, “Lasting Hold,” for proof. The young band will blend perfectly with younger opener Syren, a Purdue University shoegaze combo. $10.
Sal Vulcano, 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, Long Center for the Performing Arts, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette — A little more than one year after Joe Gatto’s downtown Lafayette appearance, it’s time for another “Impractical Joker” to have his turn on the Long Center for the Performing Arts stage. Sal Vulcano will bring his Everything’s Fine Tour (It’s not, Sal. It’s so not.) and fans will get to see how the New York comic does on his own without Gatto, Brian “Q” Quinn and James “Murr” Murray from his hit show that is probably playing on a TV screen at a gym or bar near you. Vulcano can also be regularly seen on “The Misery Index,” a comedic game show on TBS that employs Vulcano and most of his “Impractical Jokers” colleagues. While most know him from television, Vulcano is no stranger to live audiences. His improv troupe, The Tenderloins, has performed for more than a decade. With his penchant for pranks and improvisation, it will be interesting to see Vulcano in a new format for his Greater Lafayette fans. This event is SOLD OUT.
Winter Market, 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 7, Bistro 501 Atrium at the Lahr, 117 N. Fifth St., Lafayette — As we slowly inch toward warmer weather and that wonderful time of year that is Farmers Market season, the downtown market organizers offer their dedicated customers another bridge to early May, when weekly Farmers Markets once again grace downtown, Purdue University and West Lafayette’s Cumberland Park. The March edition of the Winter Market will fill the Bistro 501 Atrium Saturday morning with new and familiar farmers, bakers, artisans and their wares. Adding to the festive atmosphere will be local acoustic musician Grant Spence and activities for the kids.
“Music of Many Places: Mozart, Bruch & Dohnányi,” 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 600 Ferry St., Lafayette — Everyone loves Sunday brunch but what about Sunday Bruch? Nineteenth century composer and violinist Max Bruch that is. Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society will present his “Eight Pieces” for clarinet, piano and viola. The musicians will also perform Mozart’s “Trio in E flat Major” before doubling the players for a movement from 20th century Hungarian composer Ernő Dohnányi’s “Sextet in C Major,” a composition for horn, clarinet and a piano quartet. While Bruch doesn’t come “with a slice of cantaloupe at the end,” the intimate classical music the perfect post-brunch soundtrack. $20, free for students. Tickets.
“Noche de Baile/Dance Night Fundraiser,” 7 p.m. Sunday, March 8, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Help local community members while shaking it to Latin dance music at this noche de baile or dance night. DJ CANDE will be spinning, and the intimate People’s dancefloor will be full in the name of helping your neighbor in crucial times of need. Proceeds from the event will go to Ayuda Mutua of Greater Lafayette, a community-rooted mutual aid network led by and for immigrants. Ayuda Mutua stands for showing up for one another while focusing on food insecurity, community care, defense and knowledge. $15 suggested donation.
