Here, again, with five suggestions for your Greater Lafayette week, it’s …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
México in the Heart, 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, Long Center for the Performing Arts , 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette — Also known as México en el Corazón, México in the Heart returns to the Long Center for a night of music, dance and folklore. The performers at this free show wear traditional Mexican costumes while they perform songs just in time to get ready for Mexican Independence Day, Sept. 16. This show did very well in 2023 and should do even better this weekend. México in the Heart is an initiative of the North American Institute for Mexican Advancement, whose mission is to improve the lives of the Mexican-American and Mexican community in North America by empowering them through educational, social, economic development and integration initiatives. One of its activities is the dissemination of art and culture, which is why México in the Heart has performed in such venues as Mount Rushmore, Millennium Park in Chicago and Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
New gallery exhibitions opening reception, 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — A trio of area artists will debut their freshest works this weekend: Young artist Andralyn Yao returns to The Arts Federation (TAF) galleries, this time with a textiles show, and Ellen Byrnes will bring new vibrant paintings on wood veneer. Bethany Hohman, a Purdue University fine art alumna, has been working in libraries and schools for the last several years, but she is always creating new conceptual works for galleries such as TAF. The shows will run through Sept. 27.
GermanFest, 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, St. Boniface Church, 318 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Where else can you find traditional German bratwurst and traditional steak tacos side-by-side than Germanfest, downtown Lafayette’s beloved late summer festival. St. Boniface’s German roots and current population of Latino parishioners combine for a memorable experience with both cultures well represented in music, food and faith. Food booths all over the St. Boniface campus will be busy with both German and Mexican cuisines while kids will have plenty of carnival rides, games and other activities to enjoy. As usual, live music will be handled by Lafayette’s own The Big Swing Band and Indianapolis’ Der Polkatz. And don’t forget the beer/cervezas! $5 for people 13 and older.
Lafayette Roller Derby vs. Demolition City, 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, 1406 Teal Road, Lafayette — Your Lafayette Supernovas will clash with Evansville’s Demolition City roller derby squad in the fastest, hardest-hitting bout that will make you forget about football Saturday and/or Sunday. Support these tough athletes by cheering them on until the final whistle. $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
Sounds of Summer with Tyler Truth, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, Memorial Island Stage, Columbian Park — Truth in country music lyrics is essential. So is seeing new, local pop country singer Tyler Truth. The “city country boy” has volumes of material for lyrics, especially from his first 17 years living in the tough streets of southside Chicago. Truth moved to Indiana after and is now settled in Lafayette as a singer/rapper. Whether singing or rhyming, Truth is telling stories from the heart. His album, “From the Mud,” starts strong with “Long Road.” The song is like Truth’s bio but with strong verses, hooks and point of view.
