Programming note: Based in Lafayette is still on some scheduled downtime this week. I’ll have several things coming, but if you don’t see the regular load of editions in your inbox in the next few days, that’s the reason. (Your subscriptions are still good.) Thanks for reading. And thanks for the chance to step away for a bit.
Even in downtime, it’s Thursday. So here, again, with five suggestions for your Greater Lafayette week, it’s …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
Chaylyn, 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 19, Purdue Memorial Union terrace — The next big wedding song could come from young Indianapolis pop singer-songwriter Chaylyn. Released in December, “The One,” not to be confused with an awful choice for a wedding song in “One,” is a beautiful, piano-driven ballad that is just begging to be a new couple’s first dance. A mother and unashamed coffee addict, Chaylyn can pick the acoustic and electric guitars well, as heard in “Morning Coffee” and “I’m Fine.” While the music is on the softer side, her powerful voice should hold the outdoor audience when she headlines the penultimate edition of the Purdue Memorial Union Summer Concert Series. The concert is free, with eats from Walk-on’s Sports Bistreaux for sale in the Union.
“Indiana Heritage Art Works” by Ron Burgess opening reception, 6-9 p.m. Friday, July 19, Artists’ Own, 518 Main St., Lafayette — Take a walk through Indiana landscapes near and far, in winter and summer, via the paintings and pastel works from Artists’ Own’s own Ron Burgess. Landscapes new and old will showcase quiet scenes of Indiana’s beauty through the artist’s expert eyes and brushes. Some of the pieces appear in the Indiana Plein Aire Painter’s 2013 tome, “Painting Indiana III.” Along with having been an award-winning artist throughout Indiana, Burgess has taught at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. He is a member of the Indiana Artists Club, The Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts, Chicago Pastel Painters and Pastel Society of America. This show is part of the July edition of the monthly Downtown Gallery Walk.
Downtown Jazz & Blues Festival, 5-11 p.m. Saturday, July 20, Fifth Street, downtown Lafayette — Quickly becoming one Lafayette’s busier bands, the young jazz cats in Palace Kat have been getting that downtown Lafayette summer festival boost. After anchoring a stage at the Taste of Tippecanoe with its smooth, funky and mostly instrumental music, Palace Kat will show out for the annual Downtown Jazz & Blues Festival. The young bucks will be joined by Lafayette jazz authority Brent Laidler and his new hot jazz outfit, The Swing 48. The name was inspired by a Django Reinhardt number of the same name. On the bluesier side of the community event’s coin, new Greater Lafayette bluesmen the Codrak Blues Band will make its festival debut while the versatile Chris Xioufarides and his Scratch Thing will provide a rocking blues set to close out the night. $15, $5 for ages 13-18.
CoyoteBear, 8 p.m. Saturday, July 20, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — A primal mix of American roots music that only local singer-songwriter Cody Hall can provide will emanate from the wonderland that is The Spot’s patio this weekend. Still flying high from the debut of his first LP, “Too Many Ghosts, a few months ago, Hall and his CoyoteBear project are on a heater right now, so hot that not even July’s swelter can stop the music. $10 or pay what you can.
Entre Amigos, 7 p.m. Tuesday, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — If you didn’t get enough jazz Saturday, you’re in for a treat as Chicago’s Latin jazz ensemble Entre Amigos makes its Lafayette debut. The quartet is led by saxophonist Roy McGrath, but all members compose. It’s an amalgamation of talent and celebrating the exotic spins musicians can make with the jazz. $10. Tickets.
