Five choice ideas for the weekend and beyond in Lafayette/West Lafayette.
Friday Night Live with Audrey Johnson and Lee Anna Atwell, 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S. 10th St., Lafayette — The Art Museum’s live music series continues with a unique program from local opera singer Audrey Johnson and accompanist Lee Anna Atwell. For music and history fans alike, Johnson will present “A Celebration of Jewish-American Composers.” From classical to pop, Johnson sings them all and offers tremendous historical context while describing impacts from such greats as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Erich Korngold. She will touch on tunes from Tin Pan Alley and the American Yiddish Theater, as well. Johnson, who performs nationwide, will sing in English, German, Yiddish and Hebrew. Free but RSVPs are appreciated.
Laugh a Lot in Lafayette Comedy Show with Chris Harvey, Fab Monroe, Adriane Thompson and Dwayne Cobb, 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, Rat Pak Venue, 102 N. Third St., Lafayette — Big and bearded, Chris Harvey made his comedy debut at 26 in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Soon, he was performing all over the Buckeye State and beyond. Harvey connects with audiences with ease and he’s starting to connect with filmmakers too. In the last few years, Harvey racked up several acting credits, mostly in independent features. However, he appeared as “Trucker One” in Mark Wahlberg’s 2020 drama “Good Joe Bell.” Other credits have the comic playing “White Boy Bobby” in “Ray Jr’s Rent Due,” which streamed on Hulu, and get ready to give the gift of Harvey when his “Big Hairy Guy” steals scenes in the upcoming indie flick “The Drone That Saved Christmas.” And check out the comic in the 2022 hip-hop video “4 Da Gang” by 42 Dugg and Roddy Ricch. Be sure to arrive early for Fab “Standing O” Monroe, a stellar standup comic from Chicago. She’s fresh from a national tour with “MOJO” Dyon Brooks. This show is for ages 18 and older. $30.
Historic Falley House Tour, 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 601 New York St. — A star of Unseen City Tours, the infamous Falley House — also known as the Wright House — will again open its doors to the public. Once a symbol of opulence and culture, it’s better remembered for housing one of Lafayette’s most grisly murders. On the morning of Aug. 2, 1982, Marcia Heald, visiting from Plainfield, hung out with residents of an apartment within the house, married couple Gerald and Shelly Smith. After a wild night of poetry and folk music, Heald had slept in her car parked nearby. After Gerald Smith went to work in the morning, Heald reentered the apartment, stripped nude and attacked the sleeping Shelly Smith with a paring knife obtained from the Smith’s kitchen. Heald stated she thought Shelly Smith was “a serpent possessed by Satan” and tried to cut the head off the snake so she wouldn’t “rejuvenate.” Heald thought herself to be Eve from the Biblical Garden of Eden and screamed, “Yahweh’s kingdom come,” while killing Shelley Smith. On trial, Heald said she was “Mars, the god of war” and was almost 6,000 years old. Heald, 44, was sentenced to 70 years in prison. Oh yeah, the Falley House used to hold a bunch of old John Phillip Sousa stuff, too. Tickets: $10.
50 Six Feet with 3 of a Kind and Tyroneoke, 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — Brandon Reed’s hustle, hard work and talent has made Lafayette a better place for decades. Whether he’s promoting local music or starting up a new business, Reed rocks figuratively and literally, especially when he takes the microphone in front of his hard rock band, 50 Six Feet. While gigs aren’t as numerous as they once were, 50 Six Feet still packs them in after more than a decade of thrashes and bashes. Reed is celebrating his “35th” birthday so expect an even wilder set than usual.
Dan Alten with Danise Barlow and Kristin Carnes, 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — Louisville, Kentucky, standout standup comedian Dan Alten will bring his frenetic funny to Lafayette. The young comic travels the nation performing, armed with such bits as “I have a weird butt. It’s nonexistent — mostly anus.” Opening the show will be 52-year-old Danise “The Comedianne” Barlow, who used comedy to overcome abuse and hardships throughout her life. The Indianapolis talent suffers from arthrogryposis, a rare condition where joints or muscles have limited movement, but Barlow’s larger than life personality pushes away any discomfort when she is on-stage. West Lafayette’s own Kristin Carnes hosts. She’s hosted for big names in recent months, including Brent Terhune. A woman of a certain age, Carnes busts stereotypes and guts with every set. $5.
