By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
Black Wax Records benefit show with Silver Wizard, CICADA, Murder Burger and Strands of Serenity, 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — Help Black Wax Records keep the needles in the grooves by attending an eclectic, all local rock show. Young metal band Strands of Serenity will join Murder Burger for the heavy, and Siver Wizard and CICADA will supply the tripped-out, freaky sounds. Proceeds from the show will go to the only record store on the Lafayette side of the river. $10.
And make it a North End weekend by sleeping in your car in the parking lot — or I guess you can go home, sleep and then come back — and be the first to get in to see Logansport melodic metalheads Forgotten Ashes with Indianapolis acts Kahani and Moonside, a “Nintendocore” metal band. This show starts at 8 p.m.
BMFX Wrestling, 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19, Wea Rec Center, 2000 Wea School Road, Lafayette — No abuse should ever happen in the home — leave it to the professional wrestlers in the ring. Lafayette’s own BMFX Wrestling returns to Wea Rec Center to raise funds for Abuse Awareness and Accountability, a nonprofit organization that provides “the most safe and accountable intervention to end all levels of abusive behavior.” These local and regional wrestlers will slam each other in a family-friendly environment as they vie for championship gold and for survivors of abuse.
Tap for TAF, 3-6 p.m. Saturday, April 18, Tippecanoe Country Parking Garage, 200 South St., Lafayette — Helping area artists by drinking beer is one the most win-win situations you could find this weekend. The annual Tap for TAF event raises funds for The Arts Federation and the aid it gives artists and art organizations over a 14-county span. Brewers from all over Greater Lafayette will showcase their latest and most popular beers — along with nonalcoholic choices. Drinkers receive a tasting glass and get to fill and refill it with whatever they want. There will be some eats to help balance things out a bit. $40, $10 for designated drivers. Tickets.
Hooten Hallers, 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — One of St. Louis’ best American roots music acts returns to Lafayette. Hooten Hallers’ mix of blues, country and punk rock should be familiar to Lafayette fans by now as the band has earmarked our town for almost 20 years when routing Midwest circuits. Next week’s triumphant return will have the band supporting its brand-new record — literally released April 3 — “Van Jams Vol. 1.” The trio has logged thousands of miles in its tour van over the course of its 19 years of existence. Help them log a few more by attending this show and buying Hooten Hallers’ new record. Tickets.
Wolf Park’s Birthday Party, 4-8 p.m. Saturday, April 18, Wolf Park, 4004 E. County Road 800 North, Battle Ground— For more than a half-century, Wolf Park has been a source or conservation, preservation and education utilizing its pack of furry friends as source material. This weekend, the Battle Ground landmark will celebrate an astounding 54 years in Tippecanoe County. The big birthday party event will give the wolves much enrichment before its evening howl time. Live music and food trucks for humans will add to the festivities. $25, $20 for children. Tickets.
