And now, here’s …
By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
Chase Cotten, 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, Brokerage Brewing Company, 2516 Covington St., West Lafayette — The next generation of Cottens are keeping jazz humming along in Lafayette. While sister Caitlin Cotten sings with dad, Steve Cotten, in The Big Swing Band, brother and son Chase Cotten has been gigging steadily everywhere between his Indianapolis homebase and Greater Lafayette. The young trumpeter and his band showed well at June’s Taste of Tippecanoe on the Digby’s Stage, and they will return to Greater Lafayette to get your weekend off to a jazzy start.
Mosey Down Main Street, 6-11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, downtown Lafayette — Summer is not going anywhere for a while so you might as well get Mosey-fied not once but twice this month. With highs in the upper 80s, it will be a scorcher, but so what when you have Mosey beers, ice cream and other treats to cool you down to go along with the about a dozen bands and numerous businesses and nonprofit booths lined along Main Street. Kicking things off will be local singer-songwriter Dawn Hively (6 p.m., 11th and Main stage). Due to Labor Day being early this year, the final Mosey of 2025 is set for Aug. 30. For the full band lineup, check here.
Howl Night, 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, Wolf Park, Battle Ground — What a better way to pay tribute to the “Prince of Darkness” Ozzy Osbourne than to bark, er, howl at the moon with the furry friends at Wolf Park. Explore the park’s trail and be on the lookout for not only wolves, but bison, foxes and the Park’s beloved eastern box turtle. Attendees can get to know wolves’ intricate communication system and other wolf facts at 7:30 p.m. and then get ready to howl so loud that the Oz Man himself will hear you. Tickets.
NR4W, 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, Ace’s Pub, 3215 S. 18th St., Lafayette — No Rest for the Weekend, also known as NR4W, has earned hundreds of new fans by posting up at Sixth and Main streets during this summer’s various non-Mosey street festivals. Led by energetic lead vocalist V, the band takes on a plethora of rock hits from the last several decades. They even did “Take on Me” by A-ha once, nailing all those high notes. Check them in a proper bar setting this weekend at Ace’s.
Hans Gruber and the Die Hards with The Circle City Deacons and The Enstrangers, 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — A wise person once stated that third (fourth?) wave ska is “what plays in a 13-year-old kid’s head when he gets extra mozzarella sticks.” This sage might have conjured this adage after a Hans Gruber and the Die Hards show. The Austin, Texas, punk-ska act led by vocalist and trombonist TJ Robinson are definitely cheesy but also tasty in its riffs, punk beats and horn lines. And they go great with marinara sauce. Opening will be Indianapolis ska vets The Circle City Deacons and mostly local punks The Enstrangers. $13.39 in advance. Tickets.
