Holiday Art Sale Opening Day, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — Local and regional art make the best holiday gifts and some of the best you can present to your loved ones will be all under one roof in proper gallery settings. The Arts Federation’s annual Holiday Art Sale will host 34 area artists’ works — including pieces from the likes of Bowie Thompson, David Harmon, potter Juliet Kerlin, just to name a few. The pieces represent just about every medium found in traditional art exhibitions in the downtown venue. The sale runs during regular TAF gallery hours through Dec. 20.
Dom Flemons, 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry St., Lafayette — First known as a member of the Grammy Awad-winning American roots band Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dom Flemons has gone solo and has delved deep into the art of songwriting, especially in the blues, country and folk traditions. The multi-instrumentalist based in Durham, North Carolina, but originally from Phoenix can play common instruments like guitar, banjo and harmonica as well as traditional instruments that faded away but were important in early American records from about 100 years ago like the jug, fife and bones. The 43-year-old is indeed a walking encyclopedia of traditional American music, so expect riveting stories between the powerful music. Here is a video I shot of Flemons and the Chocolate Drops waaaay back in 2011 during a concert at Purdue University’s Loeb Playhouse. Tickets.
