Five choice ideas for the weekend and beyond in Lafayette/West Lafayette.
“Sixty Square Inches XX,” now through Feb. 10, Ringel Gallery, in Purdue’s Stewart Center — New works from printmakers around the world fuel Purdue Galleries’ 20th “Sixty Square Inches” show. Juried by Jennifer Scheuer, assistant professor of printmaking in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art and Performance, the mostly biennial show is a long-standing exhibition that gives printmakers exposure as well as the challenge of creating small prints 60 square inches or smaller. While the first found prints date back more than 2,000 years, the goal of “Sixty Square Inches” is to highlight the diversity and imagination printmakers put into their replicable work. A reception will be held in the Ringel Gallery at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26. The gallery’s hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Chad McCullough Jazz Quartet, 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — Chicago trumpeter Chad McCullough has performed to audiences around the world. One of his international stops was to Belgium — the home country of McCullough’s newest collaborator in pianist Bram Weijters. The two are joined by an acclaimed rhythm section of bassist John Christensen and drummer Zach Harmon for a tour that passes through Lafayette tonight. As a quartet, the group explores the sonic emotional possibilities of jazz, which can also be heard on McCullough’s latest album — “Forward.” McCullough is a renowned talent: The Chicago Tribune dubbed his chops as “mercurial poetry and high craft.” $5 or pay what you can.
“The Throwback” with Lord Reign, 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, Rat Pak Venue, 102 N. Third St., Lafayette — Fans of 1980s and ‘90s hip-hop, pop and R&B should hit the downtown Rat Pak dance floor. Hosted by local hip-hop artist Lord Reign, the night will commemorate booty shakin’ and expert rhymes from the golden age of hip-hop. DJ Sunn will spin the hits while you try to remember “The Humpty Dance.” The video wall will be up so you can see all the vibrancy from the era and those classic fashion choices, from track suits and Adidas to baggy pants and Timberlands. This event is for ages 18 and older. Carry-in food is welcome. $5.
Brendan Loughrey, 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, Nine Irish Brothers, 119 Howard Ave., West Lafayette — Celtic rocker and pride of County Donegal, Brendan Loughrey, and his guitar return to West Lafayette this weekend. After taking the gamble to move to Nashville, Tennessee, from Ireland almost 25 years ago, Loughrey found jackpots of opportunity in Music City, quickly meeting record industry insiders and lots of musicians in rock and country. The Irish lad soon earned opening slots for rock ‘n’ hall-of-famers Sting, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and even the Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself, Chuck Berry. Loughrey states that hearing Berry say, “Man, that skinny little white boy sure can sing,” was a career highlight. Now based out of Indianapolis, Loughrey boasts an amazing catalog of four albums worth of originals, which consist of upbeat zingers, drinking anthems, somber ballads and everything in between.
Forrest McCurren with Marc Ridge, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Fans of John Prine and Todd Snider ought to check out Forrest McCurren, a young Missouri-based singer-songwriter who blends country, folk and Americana sounds. While a time zone away, McCurren’s tunes about trailer park romance, diner waitresses and “coming back home again” should still hit with Hoosiers. McCurren is touring on his new record, “Oh Me, Oh My.” Lafayette’s own Marc Ridge opens. $10. Tickets.
