By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
Lauren Grace, 6 p.m. Friday, June 16, Purdue Memorial Union — From farmers markets, art openings and quiet winery gigs to Purdue University’s biggest summer stage, local singer-songwriter Lauren Grace is an up-and-coming talent that impresses whether she’s strumming solo or in front of her band. Grace has an indie-pop vibe that should captivate as part of the PMU Summer Concert Series. Her songwriter chops belie her age as evidenced by recent singles “Lingering” and “Small Towns.” Grace’s gig calendar is full for the summer, but this show is one of the better ones because her music will be in the spotlight and not competing with locally grown produce, paintings or clinking wine glasses.
The Foleys with O12 and Yesterday’s Chips, 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 16, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — Say hello to Mrs. Foley’s baby boy’s first tribute band. South Bend punk rockers The Foleys will make their Lafayette debut this weekend armed with the sonic equivalent of a barbed wire baseball bat. Inspired by the pro wrestling antics of Mick Foley and his various personas over the decades, The Foleys are a wrestling fan’s dream – aggressive punk with lyrics that celebrate the sweaty action of the sport. Band members dress up like Foley’s beloved 1990s and 2000s characters like Mankind, Cactus Jack, Dude Love and elder Foley, complete with the signature red and black sleeveless flannel shirt. Just watch out for Mr. Socko. Opening the show will be the comeback of Lafayette’s own Yesterday’s Chips. Like Foley’s career, the Chips might get crunched here and there, but they cannot be killed. The local punk band is led by vocalist and pro wrestling aficionado Dave Linder, who was born for gigs like this. $10.
“Reimagined Journeys,” 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S. 10th St., Lafayette — Inspired by German composer Carl Koelling’s dramatic piano tune “Dangerous Journey,” a local painter, musicians and poets joined forces to present “Reimagined Journeys.” Multidisciplinary collaboration of any kind is always a journey, and results from such exploration can be seen and heard this weekend. The exhibit features new paintings by Becki Canine and poetry by Kanika Ahuja, Logan February and JK Anowe, who will be on hand to recite some of his work. Anowe is a Nigerian-born writer who is a current Master of Fine Art in poetry candidate at Purdue. His style is described as “self-centric” with verses that “interrogate the existential, the autobiographical landscape of the psyche—especially as these relate to mental illness and such externals as the body, family and country.” Lafayette’s own Sheeza will add the live music element of this artistic journey.
Taste of Tippecanoe, 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17, downtown Lafayette — Every bite you take, every sip you make, the local arts scene gets stronger. This simple recipe has been encoded within the Taste of Tippecanoe for decades. Proceeds of this downtown Lafayette summer holiday bolster The Arts Federation’s many programs, such as the After School Arts Program — free art classes that are enjoyed by hundreds of area kids every year. The 2023 Taste will feature 26 local and area food and drink purveyors, six dance DJs, eight live bands, live art demonstrations from local painter and muralist Zach Medler, and performances from the Greater Lafayette Dance Collective. Eat. Drink. Be merry and support local art in one night. $5 in advance, $10 at the gate. Tickets.
Strangled Darlings with CoyoteBear, 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Indie folk trio Strangled Darlings have crisscrossed the country many times to purvey its incendiary tunes “about death, debauchery and taxes.” The Portland, Oregon, band is led by husband/singer/mandolinist George Veech and wife/harmonious singer Jess Anderly, who rocks a six-string bass played like a banjo. Songs can groove, creep up like a murder ballad and even have some pop sensibilities, which helps indoctrinate new fans wherever Strangled Darlings play. Fun fact: Veech and Anderly met at a party in 2009 when they spontaneously sang a duet of Prince’s “Pussy Control” together. Lafayette songwriting powerhouse Coyote Bear opens. $10. Tickets.
