By Tim Brouk / For Based in Lafayette
“Young Frankenstein,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 13-15; 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16; 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20-22 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 22, Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, 313 N. Fifth St., Lafayette — The Lafayette musical comedy event of the fall is finally here. Civic Theatre’s production of Mel Brooks’ classic “Young Frankenstein” — “That’s ‘Frahnkensteen’” — stomps onto the stage with a large cast, top notch directors and choreographers, and songs that pay proper treatment to the classic 1974 film. The show stars Cordell Brown as the affable Frederick Frankenstein — “That’s FrahnkenSTEEN!’” — and Richie Stephan as his Abby-normal Monster. The musical is mostly faithful to the film but with more singing and dancing from the rest of the cast of memorable characters in Igor/Eyegor (played by Martin Fernandez), Frau Blucher (Rachel Young), Inga (Hope Young), Elizabeth (Katherine Jenness) and The Hermit (Doug Prium). “Walk this way” to Civic this weekend. $19.50-$28.50. Tickets.
Blacklight Nightmare with vya, Space Weather and entitled, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, The Eleventh House, 116 N. Third St., Lafayette — After some hiatus, all-ages rock shows are back in downtown Lafayette. Four bands from near and far will converge upon The Eleventh House for a heavy music extravaganza. Leading the way will be Blacklight Nightmare (great name), a “psychedelic doom groove alt-metal” act from Indianapolis, and vya, a hard rock band from New York on a Midwest tour supporting its debut album “Instar.” Joining in on the fun will be Space Weather (another great name), a post-hardcore quintet from Pittsburgh, and entitled, a new punk rock band of Purdue University students. This is a Doom Room production. $10.
TEDxLafayette, 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, MatchBOX, 17 S. Sixth St., Lafayette — A six-pack of local, regional and international movers and shakers in business, nonprofits and science will share their expertise on-stage for another sleek, concise and dynamic TEDxLafayette. Like the national TEDx events, our local TEDx-ers make their multimedia presentations 18 minutes or less — just enough time make their best points before turning things into a TEDzzz. Slated to speak this weekend will be Maia Webb, a Purdue University biomedical engineering major and robotics expert; Elena Gabor, a Romanian-born Purdue alumna now a professor of organizational communications at Bradley University; Donte Wilburn, an entrepreneur, pastor and best-selling author; Dan Ritchie, co-founder of Functional Aging Institute and Purdue alumnus; Jesús Correa, entrepreneur and Latin business liaison for Greater Lafayette Commerce; and Leah Giorgini, former Lafayette resident and executive director of the U.S. chapter of the International Society of Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis. $29-$75. Tickets.
Drag show, 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — “No One Mourns the Drag Star” is the theme of People’s Brewing Company’s first drag show, a nod to the upcoming blockbuster “Wicked: For Good.” A spoof on the Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo “Wickedly” popular hit, “No One Mourns the Wicked,” local drag performers Alexa Pro, Magnus Cum Laude and Daphne Drake will team up with the Indianapolis tandem of Brentlee Bich and Kitt St. Clair for a night of outrageous costumes, spectacular dance moves and bawdy comedy. Be sure to dress in your best green and/or pink for an extra Grande time. Tickets.
Punk Rock Pizza Party with Flamingo Nosebleed, Snakehandler Church, Safety Off and Criminal Record, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — Pizza and punk have gone together since Dee Dee Ramone proclaimed “Hey, pizza! Great! Let’s dig in!” in his only line in “Rock N Roll High School,” a 1979 Roger Corman gem. The Doom Room has known this and has produced seven Punk Rock Pizza Parties that feature not only the bands but the bands’ often outrageous pizza creations. Luckily, North End Pub’s pizza chefs and ovens do the actual baking. The pies are served buffet style as the bands rock out. The 2025 edition will feature Fort Wayne punk rock royalty dual headliners in pop punk vets Flamingo Nosebleed and Snakehandler Church, a punk rock power trio fresh from its recent EP release of “Big Time … Serious Jesus.” Opening will be Indianapolis’ Safety Off and new Lafayette act Criminal Record — $10.
Ha Ha Tonka, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — A funny name to some, Ha Ha Tonka, inspired from a Missouri state park of the same, has laughed to national prominence, thanks to the band’s impressive five-album discography on Chicago Americana label, Bloodshot Records. Tickets.
