Tim’s Picks: What’s up this weekend?
Five ideas to get you lined up.
Support for this edition comes from Delphi Opera House, where the 10th Anniversary Season continues. The second half of the season kicks off Saturday, Feb. 21, with Livingston Taylor (yes, brother to James Taylor) performing at 7:30 p.m. The following Saturday, Feb. 28, My Brother’s Keeper, an Ohio-based progressive bluegrass band performs. The First Friday in March, Indy-based rock band, Warrior Kings, brings a night of Led Zeppelin classics to the Opera House. For live music in a historic, intimate venue, look to the Delphi Opera House with over 21 shows playing before the season concludes at the end of May. “The Improvised Bachelorette Show” with One Size Fits All, 9:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, 313 N. Fifth St., Lafayette — After Friday night’s staging of “The Revolutionists,” audience members — and comedy fans who couldn’t score a ticket — should witness a rose of a Civic After Dark event. Lafayette’s best improv troupe One Size Fits All will give its cracked take on the popular “Bachelorette” reality show through scenes, songs and games inspired by the demented suggestions from a late-night crowd. Love and laughter will certainly be in the air. $5.
Mound Builders with Pale Horseman, Patron Saints of Violence, Salivus and DJ Circle T, 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, North End Pub, 2100 Elmwood Ave., Lafayette — If there is ever a Mt. Rushmore of Lafayette heavy metal, the Mound Builders must be on it. The band that can hang/dominate with any sludge, thrash and even death metal acts will mark 17 years as a band this weekend. They can finally see an R-rated movie! But in all seriousness, the Mound Builders will celebrate its birthday, but the sonic presents are for you. Joining Mound Builders will be youthful Monticello thrash from Salivus and Indianapolis hardcore from Patron Saints of Violence. Pale Horseman will co-headline. The Chicago sludge metal act has “only” been together for 15 years, even releasing an excellent split EP with the Mound Builders back in 2016. Happy birthday to one of Lafayette’s best and most brutal. Tickets.
Milonga, 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, The Arts Federation, 638 North St., Lafayette — Tango Lafayette struts and slinks its way back to downtown Lafayette for a sultry night of dance. All are invited to move to the exotic rhythms courtesy of DJ Barron in a traditional Argentinian tanda style, where a set of three or four songs are played in a row and partners don’t change until a short break after each set of music. $20, $10 for college students.
Malambre, 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, The Spot Tavern, 409 S. Fourth St., Lafayette — Lafayette’s own South American and Caribbean sound machine Malambre returns to The Spot with a new set of cumbia, bolero and son music. Son speaks on a traditional Cuban style of music that mixes Spanish and African elements. Wherever the music stems from, it will be danceable in the capable hands and voices of Malambre.
Bobcat Opossum with Liv LaFluv, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, People’s Brewing Company, 2006 N. Ninth St., Lafayette — Fort Wayne duo Ellen Coplin and Sean Hoffman, collectively known as Bobcat Opossum, return to Lafayette with a slew of bluegrass and Irish folk tunes played on various instruments — guitars, accordion and fiddle, just to name a few. The band is extremely well-traveled, playing 17 shows in six states in February alone. Opening the show will be young Bloomington folk artist Liv LaFluv. Tickets.
