Pretty strong words. It does tend to discourage fruitful conversation. I, for one, would like to see a Purdue University President who would actively work to improve relations with the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette. Also with Tippecanoe County. It would be comforting to see the next President have some visiblity in community activites--not just university or big donor events. The Margerum and Dennis administrations worked hard to improve the city's interactions with the university. It is likely that the Democratic and Republican city administrations in Lafayette tried to do their best as well. Maybe even Tippecanoe County administrators, councilors, and commissioners. It would be good to see all of the reactions and relations between the University and its Neighbors not being a one-way street.

For those that want to catch up on history, our former local reporter, Eric Weddle, made a complaint to Joseph B. Hoage, the current Public Access Counselor, who wrote this horrible opinion stating that saying your meeting at the airport is sufficient to meet Open Door Law:

Under Dennis, while engagement and communication increased, working with West Lafayette as a partner was lacking when it came to development. West Lafayette rolled over and over repeatedly. Just look at the Village's current concrete jungle status.

Given the recent couple of "searches", Joe's comments are spot-on. Done in secret, little to no faculty involvement, etc.

Someone who understands the value of a liberal arts education. Someone who will work WITH the amazing faculty that are still left at the U.
