Updated 13-story plan delivered for Chauncey Hill Mall site
13 stories, 1,600-plus beds outlined for what West Lafayette calls ‘a bucket list site’
A Chicago-based developer’s updated proposal to replace Chauncey Hill Mall in West Lafayette with a 13-story mix of apartments and retail space, along with a public plaza, landed with city officials and local planners Tuesday.
The designs are tweaked from a set of plans Core Spaces – the developers who built and opened the Hub West Lafayette high-rise just down the State Street hill from Chauncey Hill Mall in 2019 – delivered in early 2023 for a project called Hub Chauncey.
This version is one of four in recent years proposed for Chauncey Hill Mall, a strip center opened in 1979 a few blocks from Purdue’s campus. And it comes after a one-year deadline expired amid city and Core Spaces negotiations for a planned development rezoning both sides could work with
.
“I have barely dug into this, but I’m excited to see the amount of retail space that will be retained on site and the public plaza will provide a much-needed outlet for a densely packed urban corridor,” Jenifer Van Schuyver, West Lafayette development director, said. “Ultimately, this site is a bucket list site to develop for West Lafayette and this proposal checks a lot of boxes.”
