WEST LAFAYETTE SETS STAGE FOR LOTTERY FOR MORE TRANSFER STUDENTS
Current students who live in Tippecanoe School Corp. boundaries but have transferred into West Lafayette classrooms will be allowed to stay and a limited number of slots into the district’s schools will open for families living anywhere, starting in fall 2026, according to a policy the school board hammered out Monday night.
The new transfer policy – debated for months and made necessary by a 2025 state law that undermined a working arrangement with TSC that allowed West Side to accept students whose families were willing to pay a premium to cover the property taxes raised by the district’s voter-approved referendum – sets the stage for possible lotteries to get into schools that are consistently ranked academically among Indiana’s best.
The new policy, which would set annual enrollment caps by grade and by the district overall, would open an estimated 24 slots for the 2026-27 school year.
“Based on current enrollment, existing transfers and the established grade-level capacities, the district anticipates there may be roughly two dozen openings for new transfer students in the upcoming year,” Shawn Greiner, West Lafayette schools superintendent, said after Monday’s school board vote. “While the process will be new to the district, we anticipate a smooth experience for interested families.”
Updated applications are expected to be on the West Lafayette Community School Corp. website by the end of the week, Greiner said. The deadline to apply each year is March 31, according to the policy.
The school board voted 6-1 for the policy.
