FANS HANG IN AS PURDUE FALLS IN NCAA FINAL
With under a minute to go and UConn running out the clock on a 75-60 win over Purdue for the Huskies’ second consecutive National Championship, the lawn was still packed, Boiler fans sticking with it in front of the Purdue Memorial Union.
Joe Buehrle, a Purdue grad who saw his first Purdue game in person as a freshman in 1986, was packing up a camp chair from a circle of fellow grads and friends a smattering of applause filtered through the crowd. Buehrle, who lives near Delphi, gave a shrug and smile, shook his head and gave a small hug to Kelly Smith. The pair had been roommates on campus and still catch a few games a year together at Mackey Arena.
“What can you say?” Buehrle asked. “What a season, you cannot deny.”
