WEST LAFAYETTE COUNCIL: OPEN TO ‘SAFE ZONE’ PLEAS FROM TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY FOR GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE

Pleas from the LGBTQ community Monday for West Lafayette to be a sort of sanctuary city for transgender residents to find gender-affirming care met with a willingness from the city council to consider drafting a resolution to that effect.

Larry Leverenz, West Lafayette City Council president, said Monday that he’d set up a committee of council members to work with advocates on a potential measure that could arrive as soon as the council’s July 7 meeting.

“I think there’s some understanding, some learning that has to happen on this end,” Leverenz said, after nearly a dozen people spoke in favor of the concept during public comment time at Monday’s city council meeting. “Hopefully, you can help us do that and move forward.”

Organizers pushing for a gender-affirming care statement from the city initially planned to make their pitch to the city council on May 5. That meeting featured a nearly seven-hour debate and public comment in an overflowing city hall about the proposed rezoning of 121 acres north of Kalberer Road for the $3.87 billion SK hynix advanced chip packaging facility, which ended with a 6-3 city council vote that came at 1:20 a.m.

On Monday, a few dozen advocates – many holding signs and pink, blue and white transgender flags – waited through a significantly shorter city council agenda to make their case for West Lafayette to step in.
