WEST LAFAYETTE LOOKS AT METER PARKING IN ‘ISLAND’ NEAR PURDUE, WABASH LANDING
West Lafayette could convert one- and two-hour parking spaces to metered pay parking in several areas of the city under a proposal in front of the city council Tuesday.
The move – largely covering city streets cutting through Purdue’s campus and near Wabash Landing – is in part a response to pressure on parking as student enrollment continues to grow at the university, the sponsor of the proposed ordinance said.
“When we have growth and economic development and explosion of students at Purdue, we have to have responses,” David Sanders, a West Lafayette City Council member, said. “We are a growing town with a lot of demands on our infrastructure. … We have to be able to manage traffic, manage parking and pay for enforcement. This is a way we can do this.”
